Avid DNxHR

Avid's answer to ProRes — a cross-platform intermediate codec that dominates broadcast and facility workflows where Media Composer is the backbone.

DNxHR: what it means in post-production

Avid DNxHR is an intra-frame, visually lossless codec family designed for intermediate and finishing workflows in post-production. It is the successor to DNxHD (which was limited to resolutions up to 1080p) and supports resolutions from 1080p through 4K and beyond. DNxHR uses a DCT-based compression scheme similar to ProRes, encoding each frame independently for fast scrubbing and frame-accurate editing. The family has four main variants. DNxHR LB (Low Bandwidth) targets approximately 45-80 Mbps at 1080p23.976 — an offline proxy codec for multi-stream editorial on limited storage. DNxHR SQ (Standard Quality) runs at roughly 110-145 Mbps at 1080p, comparable to ProRes 422. DNxHR HQ (High Quality) operates at approximately 145-220 Mbps at 1080p, roughly equivalent to ProRes 422 HQ, with 10-bit 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. DNxHR HQX extends to 12-bit depth while maintaining 4:2:2 at around 200-290 Mbps — designed for high-end finishing and VFX workflows. DNxHR 444 handles full 4:4:4 chroma sampling at 12-bit, comparable to ProRes 4444, at approximately 330-500 Mbps depending on content complexity. The critical distinction from ProRes: DNxHR is platform-agnostic. ProRes encoding was Mac-exclusive until Apple opened official cross-platform ProRes encoding on Windows in 2018, and even now, official ProRes encoding on Linux requires licensed SDKs. DNxHR encodes natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux through Avid, FFmpeg, and DaVinci Resolve. This matters for large broadcast facilities running Windows-based edit bays and Linux-based render farms.

When DNxHR is the right choice over ProRes

The codec choice is almost always dictated by your NLE and pipeline, not by visual quality. ProRes and DNxHR at equivalent tiers (HQ vs HQ, 4444 vs 444) produce indistinguishable results in blind tests. The deciding factors are infrastructure. Use DNxHR when your editorial pipeline runs on Avid Media Composer. Media Composer handles DNxHR natively — no AMA linking, no transcoding overhead, no codec licensing prompts. Avid editorial workflows (broadcast networks, large studio productions) are standardized around DNxHR. The Avid NEXIS shared storage ecosystem is optimized for DNxHR frame sizes and bitrates, meaning multiple editors can work from the same shared storage without performance degradation. A facility with 20 Avid seats on NEXIS storage running DNxHR SQ or HQ will see smoother multi-stream playback than the same setup with ProRes. Use ProRes when your pipeline centers on Final Cut Pro, when you are delivering to Apple ecosystem specs (Apple TV+ requires ProRes 4444 XQ masters), or when color grading in DaVinci Resolve where ProRes is the default intermediate. The honest take: transcoding between ProRes and DNxHR is lossy. Each encode generation applies the codec's DCT compression again. If a project starts in ProRes (camera original) and gets transcoded to DNxHR for Avid editorial, then conformed back to ProRes for Resolve color grading, you have two lossy encode generations. Minimize transcoding steps. Pick one codec at the start and stay in it through delivery. DaVinci Resolve Studio encodes both ProRes and DNxHR on all platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux). Use Resolve as the codec bridge if your editorial and finishing tools use different codecs.

Is DNxHR visually better than ProRes?
No. At equivalent tiers (DNxHR HQ vs ProRes 422 HQ, DNxHR 444 vs ProRes 4444), blind tests show no visible difference. Both are intra-frame, visually lossless codecs with similar bitrates. The choice should be based on your NLE and pipeline, not codec quality.
Can DaVinci Resolve encode DNxHR?
Yes. Resolve Studio encodes all DNxHR variants on Windows, macOS, and Linux without additional licensing. Go to Deliver > Video tab > Format > MXF or QuickTime > Codec > DNxHR. Resolve also decodes DNxHR in the free version.
What bitrate should I use for 4K DNxHR?
DNxHR HQ at 4K 23.976 runs at approximately 400-550 Mbps depending on content. DNxHR SQ at 4K runs at approximately 250-350 Mbps. For editorial proxies, LB at 4K drops to approximately 150-200 Mbps. For finishing, use HQ or HQX. Storage planning: one hour of 4K DNxHR HQ is approximately 200-250 GB.
