Sky Replacement

Replacing a boring or overcast sky with something cinematic. Sounds simple. It is not — every tree branch, wisp of hair, and reflected light must be accounted for.

What sky replacement actually involves

Sky replacement is a compositing technique where the original sky in a shot is isolated and replaced with a different sky plate or a procedurally generated sky. The core challenge is not generating a matte of the sky — it is handling the edges where foreground elements (trees, buildings, hair, foliage) meet the sky, and matching the lighting of the replacement sky to the foreground plate so the composite does not look like two separate images stuck together. DaVinci Resolve Studio includes a built-in Sky Replace effect (found in the OpenFX panel) that uses luminance-based and hue-based segmentation to automatically generate a sky matte. It works well for clear separations — a building against a bright sky, for example. But the effect struggles with semi-transparent elements like tree branches where the sky is visible through the leaves, or wispy hair that blends with the sky color. For anything beyond simple replacements, manual compositing in Fusion gives far more control. The workflow: create a sky matte using a combination of techniques — luminance keying (the sky is typically the brightest part of the frame), hue-based qualification (sky blues vs non-sky blues), and edge refinement with soft masks. Then composite the new sky behind the foreground, matching the horizon line position, the lighting direction (the sun in the replacement sky must come from the same angle as the original), the color temperature (a warm sunset sky behind a foreground lit by overcast daylight — roughly 6500K, the CIE D65 standard illuminant for average daylight — will always look wrong), and the grain/noise characteristics (the replacement sky must have the same grain structure as the camera-original footage). The most overlooked aspect of sky replacement: interactive lighting. When the sky changes, every reflective surface in the foreground changes too. Windows, car paint, water, eye reflections — they all carry the sky's color and brightness. If you replace a grey sky with a dramatic sunset and do not add warm reflected light to the car's hood, the composite looks obviously fake. This is why convincing sky replacement often requires secondary color corrections on foreground reflective surfaces to match the new sky's characteristics.

When sky replacement breaks

Automated sky replacement fails in five common scenarios. First: overcast original skies where the sky and foreground have similar luminance — the auto matte cannot distinguish between them, and you get holes in the foreground or sky leaking into faces. Second: complex tree canopies — the auto matte produces a hard edge around branches instead of capturing the semi-transparent gaps between leaves. Third: hair and fur against bright sky — every strand needs individual matte treatment, which automated tools cannot provide. Fourth: moving camera shots (especially handheld with rolling shutter) where the matte edge wobbles relative to the foreground. Fifth: water reflections — if the sky is replaced but the water still shows the original sky reflected, the shot is immediately exposed as a composite. The professional approach for difficult sky replacements in Resolve Fusion: use the Delta Keyer with a sampled sky color, then refine the matte with garbage mattes to exclude obvious non-sky regions, and add an Edge Matte pass for fine detail areas like tree branches. The Edge Matte is created by blurring the main matte, then subtracting the blurred version from the sharp version — the result is a thin line covering only the edge pixels where the fine detail exists. You can then treat the edge pixels with softer blending (premultiplied compositing with a 2-3 pixel edge feather) while keeping the hard-edged interior matte clean. Timing matters: always do sky replacement before color grading, not after. If you grade first and replace the sky second, you are matching a graded sky to an ungraded replacement (or vice versa), which makes matching exponentially harder. Grade the composite as a whole so the sky and foreground share the same color pipeline and the grade ties them together visually.

Sky Replacement FAQ

Can Resolve's Sky Replace effect handle all situations?
No. It works well for simple cases — buildings against bright sky, clear foreground-background separation. It fails with complex edges like tree branches, hair, semi-transparent objects, and overcast conditions where sky and foreground luminance overlap. For those cases, manual compositing in Fusion with the Delta Keyer and edge matte passes is necessary.
How do I match the lighting direction of a replacement sky?
Study the foreground plate carefully. Look at shadow direction, highlight position on faces and objects, and the overall contrast direction. The sun in your replacement sky must match. If the foreground has shadows falling to the left, the replacement sky's sun must be on the right. You can also add a subtle directional light effect to the composite to reinforce consistency.
Should I grade before or after sky replacement?
Always replace the sky first, then grade the composite as a whole. Grading before replacement means you are trying to match a graded foreground to an ungraded sky replacement — the color temperatures and contrast will never align. Grade the composite so both elements share the same color pipeline.
